Another 5***** at Bradfield Nr Manningtree. Great location on the River Stour, parking in a fee paying grass field, with loads of parking.
4 wings 1 fin and four wind foilers turned up for the 11am as HT was 1.30 and unless you want to wade thru mud, its best to watch the time!
Sunny hot day with a force 4/5 was the order of the day with white caps at Wrabness and Holbrook bay ends.
The census for wind foil was 6m, fin 7m and wing 4/5m. I was tempted again to fin, straight across the river towards Harkstead bay. My windfoil setup today was, mast foot jammed at the front of my 2m SB freeride 160L. 900FW and switched from 95cm to 105cm fuse with 330 set at minus 2. This setup was after trial and error and so turned out to be the best setup I have ever used in 15 knots ever! Straight from the off I was foiling half mast fast on the broadish reach -which was new to me on this board, with no breaching and very stable! The 95cm fuse was very unstable and at speed off wind would eventually breach no matter how much front pressure I applied. The only way was not to sheet in. This time I was sheeting in hard like on a fin board with both feet in the straps, gliding in the flat water. Brilliant! Did several runs for an hour then the wind dropped to about 10kts. Wings and wind foilers came in to rig uo after 20 mins. I swopped front wing to 1100 and rear to 500, worrying if the wind came back I would breach off wind. The wind was back after 30 mins even harder so maybe 15-20 kts and unbelievably the board sailed even easier. The 1100 top speed was 19.73 knots beating the 900 FW speed at 19.40 kts! The fact that the board was so well behaved means I will be using the 1100 FW a lot! Think the minus 2 on the stab kept the nose down and level as the board built up speed, without much front foot pressure. The beat was easy which was really interesting, and was as quick as my old 1M wide Patrik race board with the 6M sail I was using. As the tide turned 1.30 the wind began to drop and I tried the stall speed with the set up, and it was like walking pace which was great. I covered 21nm with a couple of almost clean jibes only fumbling and the boom grab which was frustrating. The 105 fuse is 2" longer at the front and back ends compared to the 95 fuse, and I could not believe the difference, I probably will never use the 95cm fuse again! Everyone had a great time in the sun and as usual soothed the aches and pain in the steam sauna rooms.
